The August Frenzy

Several years ago I began describing our department's bustling, busy time before the kids return to school as the August Frenzy. Things always tend to get a little crazy in PDS right around that time. Despite the last-minute calls for service, cancellations, late nights, long days, and short tempers-- there are always wonderful (and sometimes extremely funny or distressing) stories shared by those returning from the field to pick up supplies or to prepare for the next day's professional learning.

I have already heard stories about mysterious disappearances, passionate principals, and divine intervention. What is your memorable moment from this year's August Frenzy?

  1. I do agree that it was a frenzy – as my Filipino friend would say “Why you in a hullabaloo?” I was sleeping late studying up for the next day’s training, emptying and reloading my tubs with the right materials. I was dragging that cart of mine everywhere… though I labored, I actually liked the way it helped tone my arm muscles! Other than that I really don’t have any dramatic stories to tell unlike my mentor Susan – haha! Well maybe except for a temporary mix-up of days, in the end, everything was good. I made my way to the right schools, thanks to Garmin my GPS, and the teachers were always gracious and left good comments! Whew – I sure am glad that’s over!

  2. Well I had some fantastic moments and some totally "frenzied moments". One of themost memorable moments was waking up the first day of LEadershop Summit and not being able to move. Yes - of all the times - my back decided not to cooperate. However - a little voice kept saying "THis the the LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE! You must go! And so I did. Truly it was a mistake - and I had to leave mid-day.
It reminded me that I am not indispensable! Imagine that! I disappeared to the chiropractor's iffice and the institute went on without me!

Another meorable moment was the lack of air conditioning at Attucks MS! I truly enjoyed the crowd, but were they ever dragging by 2:00! The heat had overtaken them!

Finally - after a long two-day workshop a kind, young teacher at Sutton ES helped me pack and load ALL my belongings into my car. It was truly a treat and so needed! God provides amazing things just when we need them.

The target in front of me was Labor Day - ah yes, a three day weekend. And my friends, it's almost here!
