Tech Talk--It's in the Air!

During the past few weeks (and months), I have noticed quite a buzz of tech talk going on in the department and district. Today in a meeting I saw a wiki that had been created as a working tool for a CIA summer event. Yesterday, someone wanted to know more about Web 2.0 tools. Last week, two individuals described a ning they had created for target groups of teachers. It's apparent that people in HISD are beginning to talk about and use Web 2.0 tools to engage teachers and to enhance their work. What have you recently heard or seen?

  1. it seems like there are days where that is all i hear around the building. the test is going to be how well they make use of those tools to be more productive, to collaborate more effectively, to reach more people, etc. if it's a "bit" it will get old after a while. another question that i've been thinking about, if our team is seemingly just ahead of the curve on this one, where do we go now?

  2. I hope that the momentum continues and leads us to many new and fascinating places in our various roles as staff developers (and as individuals living in this digitized world!).

I have been thinking about that last question, too. We have a few "first steps" ideas and have shared thoughts about the overall big picture. The ideas and input of all team members will be welcomed as we continue on the pathway to 21st century skills. Let's remember to slow down and think about this often so we can speed up and stay ahead of the curve!

  3. Yes the buzz is on regarding technology, not just for the sake of technology, but for real application. I was at Pleasantville Elementary and the wing I was on also had regular classes in session. It was wonderful to see how effortlessly the students were using Smartboard and how effortlessly the teacher used it as well. The great part was this was not a digital native teacher, but an older teacher. The students were engaged, interacting with each other, and testing was going on in the next room. All were engaged in the learning process be it assessment (TAKS) or classroom instruction. Great to see it in action.

  4. What will we do when this becomes a way of life?
I cannot imagine where we will be this time next year if this wonderful momentum continues. But I will be ready.
